The Ultimate Radar Detector Setup for Motorcyclists

Thinking about getting a radar detector for your motorcycle?

This guide outlines our top recommendations to help you choose the right one. We’ll update this blog regularly as radar detector technology continues to evolve and new models replace older ones.

Radar detectors are legal to buy and use in both cars and motorcycles here in New Zealand, and there’s a wide range of options available.

Generally, the higher the price, the better the range and features. Below, we’ve listed our top picks based on performance, features, and value—so you can find one that suits your budget and riding needs.

1. Radar Detector:

  1. Uniden R4

An absolute powerhouse. One of the best radar detectors available for the price, offering exceptional long-range detection. Approx. $995.

  2. Uniden R3

A top performer and the predecessor to the R4. Delivers excellent long-range detection. Approx. $919.

  3. Uniden DRF7

A great entry-level option. Solid range and performance at an affordable price. Approx. $589.

Note: We are not affiliated with Uniden — we simply use their radar detectors and rate them highly based on our experience and their range statistics.

We don’t recommend motorcycle-specific radar detectors currently on the market, as they offer less range and are overpriced compared to high-performance car radar detectors.

2. Power Cable

We offer a high-quality radar detector power cable designed specifically for motorcycles — you can find it here.

We recommend wiring the power cable to your bike’s switched 12V power source. This way, your radar detector will automatically turn on when you switch the ignition on.

3. Radar Detector Alert System

To hear or see radar alerts while riding, you’ll need a solution like our Radar Detector Alert System. Unlike Bluetooth setups that can have a few seconds of delay, our system delivers instant alerts with zero lag. It never needs charging — it runs directly off your motorcycle’s 12V power supply. Best of all, it’s easy to install yourself.

4. Mounting the radar to your motorcycle

  1. Quadlock mount with univeral adapter
  2. RAM mount with RAM radar mount

We recommend using a Quad Lock setup — it’s more affordable than RAM mounts while still offering excellent quality. They have a range of mounting options including handlebar mounts, stem mounts, and more.
